DIY Digital Marketing for Canadian Small Business

It’s no accident that you read this. You own a business in Canada and you searched Google (or Bing) for DIY digital marketing tools for small business, right?

You called several digital marketing companies in Toronto, Vancouver, Montreal,  Edmonton, Winnipeg,… and cannot figure out why the cost of digital marketing in Canada is so expensive. You received anywhere between $2000 to $7000 per month, depending on the size of the Canadian digital marketing company that you spoke too. you also got lower offers in a range of $1000 to $2000 per month from smaller one or two-man teams, right?

The truth is that in the jungle of Internet, it is hard for your potential customers to find you. Stats suggest that by the end of 2016 there were as many as one billion websites.

So what do you do? You need to be visible and get listed on the first page of the search result in Google. And it is hard to pay a high monthly fee for your digital marketing.  Obviously, you don’t want to get a loan to pay for the monthly cost of the digital marketing. The worst is that the $20,000 to $70,000 annual cost of the digital marketing is not a one time fee. Not even a variable cost… pretty much a fixed cost in your profit and loss sheet.

Remember that you painted your house last year, or, before that, you remodeled your deck? While digital marketing can be a very complicated task, there are pieces of it that you could do yourself.

Call few of the digital marketing companies and see which one is ready to look after your digital marketing in a consulting format.Here are few tips:

  • Content Marketing: You know your business better than anyone else. With a little bit of research, you could develop killer content. Focus on topics that discuss your product or service from your customers of view (not from your viewpoint). Ask your digital marketing advisor for the keywords that you should be focusing on. The keywords are the key to the search-engine-optimization (SEO). I’ll refer to them as “your keywords”.
  • Your website: If you already have a website and not sure if the on-page SEO is good enough, you could redo your pages with your keywords; or ask your digital marketing advisor to review and revise the content of your site for a fixed fee.
  • Backlinks: You could search google for “the best local classifieds in Canada” and register your business in there. Make sure you use your keywords when you list your business.
  • Email Marketing: Open a free account on ChimpMail and dump all your emails from friends and families there. Get a professional looking HTML email on Fiver for $5 and upload it to your ChimpMail account. Start sending out email notifications on social occasions, promotions, events, and so on. Use your keywords in your marketing emails. Avoid generalization, focus on one or two topic only in every email.

 

Your DIY digital marketing may not put you on the first line of Google, but would certainly help your local SEO ranking, and will save you thousands of dollar every year.
